Community Singers Invited to Join Bluefield College Choir

Bluefield College is looking for a few good voices

September 15, 2009

The college's Masterworks Chorale will begin rehearsals in preparation for its winter choral presentation, and, as always, community residents are invited to be a part of the college/community choir.

Masterworks rehearsals will take place on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the lower level of BC's Harman Chapel, beginning Monday, September 14, in preparation for three separate performances of Handel's "Messiah" in December.

Masterworks will perform "Messiah" first on campus, Thursday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Harman Chapel, again on Saturday, December 5 at 11 a.m. at Valley View Seventh Day Adventist Church, and a third time on Sunday, December 6 at 6 p.m. at Midway Church of Christ.

"Few choral works have proclaimed as succinctly and completely the advent and birth of Christ, His life, His sacrificial death on the cross, and His triumphant rise to eternal life as Handel's 'Messiah'," said Dr. Barbara Hudson, assistant professor of music and director of the Masterworks Chorale. "For this year's performances, we will present portions from each of these sections of Christ's life as we affirm and celebrate our faith together."

Rehearsals for the winter concerts will take place in the small auditorium in BC's Harman Chapel (Room 103 on the ground level), and voice enthusiasts from across the region are invited to join in the practice and impending performances.

"I hope to see everyone back with us again this fall, along with lots of new faces for another great time of music-making," said Dr. Hudson. "It's been such a blessing to watch Masterworks grow, not just numerically, but also musically, but we need continued community participation to help sustain and build on that growth."

Membership in Masterworks is open to "anyone who loves to sing, can match pitch, and blend with a group," Dr. Hudson said. No audition is required. A small fee is requested during the first rehearsal for the cost of music.

Masterworks Chorale is a non-auditioned chorus composed of voices from both the college family and the community. The group performs classic choral works in concerts in both the winter and spring.
