Fine Arts Community School

Bluefield College's Fine Arts Community School has released its schedule of courses for the spring 2011 semester.

 

In existence for more than 16 years, BC's Fine Arts Community School (FACS) is designed to enable local families and students of all ages and interests, including home-schoolers, to explore and study the arts with the guidance of mentors who have appropriate training and experience.

 

Classes this spring will begin as early as January 25 with others beginning as late as April. The spring course listing includes "Private Instrument Lessons," "Private Guitar Lessons," "Private Voice Lessons," Private Drum Lessons," "Private Violin Lessons," "Pottery," "Jewelry Making," "Bookmaking," "Refrigerator Artist," "Fun Fine Art," "It's All Greek to Me," "The Lost Art of Basket Making," "Circular Patchwork Quilting," "Building a Better Vegetable Garden," "Writing for Young Writers," "Writing for Adults," "Quilting," "Forensic Science," "Wreath and Bow Making," "Basics of Growing Herbs," and "Butterfly Gardening."

 

Private Instrument Lessons

Piano, organ, saxophone, clarinet, tuba, trombone, trumpet, or flute

30-minute lessons once each week for 10 weeks

Days and times to be determined with student

Tuition: $170 or $90 for five-week session

Ages 5 and up

Private Guitar Lessons

For beginners to intermediate students

30-minute lessons once each week for 10 weeks

Learn hand-building, wheel-throwing techniques, and glaze applications to form functional and decorative ware.

Jewelry Making

A beginner's class to crafting bead jewelry using a variety of styles and material.

A beginner's class to binding and creating books using a variety of styles from different cultures.

Refrigerator Artist for the Younger Child

Hands-on enrichment course designed to stimulate learning and creativity through self-expression.

Fun Fine Art Fridays

Four instructors team up to teach drawing, painting, pottery, theatre, and music.

It's All Greek to Me

Designed to enrich the experience of reading the New Testament by learning to read it in Greek.

Mondays 4:00-5:00 PM or Mondays 6:00-7:00 PM

Beginning February 7 for 10 weeks

The Lost Art of Basket Making

Learn the basic techniques of basket making by making a napkin/mail holder.

Tuesdays 6:00-8:00 PM

Circular Patchwork Quilting

Beginner or experienced quilters will turn a square into a circle, back into a square and back into a circle.

Building a Better Vegetable Garden Workshop

Beginning or experienced gardeners learn how to improve soil, start seeds, and grow the best vegetables.

Writing Workshop for Young Writers

Hear a writer and storyteller read Appalachian poetry and prompt students to find their poetic Appalachian voice, and learn from a retired English professor and writer a step-by-step process for writing flash fiction.

Writing Workshop for Adults

Explore with a writer and storyteller your place in the mountains through discussion and creative writing, and learn from a retired English professor and writer how to create different forms of poetry.

Quilting Workshop

Butterfly Gardening: How to Attract Flying Flowers to Your Garden

A $20 non-refundable registration fee is due when registering for BC Fine Arts Community School lessons and classes (but not workshops). If registering more than one person within a family, the registration fee is discounted to $15 per person. Registration fees for classes and tuition for workshops are due by the start of instruction and may be mailed and made payable to Bluefield College, 3000 College Drive, Bluefield, VA 24605.
