Bluefield, Virginia- The Rams were downed by Virginia Intermont 92-78 on Wednesday night in front of packed Dome Gymansium on Senior Night in Bluefield.
If in attendance, one would have thought the Rams would have been likely to pull away with a blowup the way SR winger Borgia M'bala was shooting. The first four minutes were all Rams, specifically M'bala who opened with 3 three-pointers and a field goal. He had 11 of the Rams first 13 points.
On the other end, the Rams neglected to stop Morris early on either. This would cause him to heat up for the remainder of the game. Assisting in the first half were seniors AJ Brown and Ted O'boute. After back-to-back buckets by the two forwards, BC jumped out to its largest lead of the half at 18-10 with 13:30 to play.
With the eight-point lead, the Cobras called a time-out and regained composure. Out of the stop, Intermont began to heat up offensively. Morris hit four shots on four consecutive possessions, while Marion responded with a three from the top of the key. Morris continued to eat away at the BC lead, and as the minutes rolled along in the first half, the Cobras took the lead off a made VI field goal by Johnson and corner three-pointer by Raspudic.
Cobras ended the half on a 18-8 run and held a considerable lead at 41-30 at the break.
Bluefield came out of the halftime break with their 'originial five' and got quick contribution from Carpenter, O'boute and M'bala- yet Morris slid in a basket between one of the posessions. The Cobras got more than just offense from Justin Morris. Morris came up with a huge block on the defensive end resulting in a transition bucket by Hart. The basket was a huge turning point in the contest.
In the matter of 90 seconds, the Cobras tallied ten points on the Rams (off turnovers) and Intermont led 58-41 with 14:40 left on the clock.
With several minutes still to play, the Rams stil found ways to get buckets. Carpenter struggled in the first half to contribute due to early foul trouble, but he helped the Rams late in the contest. Byron netted three field goals and a pair of free throws inside the five-minute mark to cut the Cobras lead down considerably.
With 1:10 to play, Carpenter got another easy bucket down low in the block to narrow the margin to only nine points as Bluefield looked to make an epic comeback at the Dome on Senior Night.
In attempt to get more opportunities, Bluefield sent Intermont to the line to shoot free throws. Both Hart and Morris hit 4 of 4 from the line, as the Rams missed a few tough looks from outside.
Virginia Intermont pulled away despite a respectable late effort by the Rams. In their two meetings this year, each team has won on their opponents' floor.
With the loss, Bluefield moves to 10-6 in the conference and could potentially meet Va Intermont again in the first round of the AAC tournament, pending the final results this weekend in men's basketball action. This was the final contest of the regular season for the men's basketball team as they await a lower-seeded team in whom they will host next week.
Overshadowed by Intermont's Morris, who went for 38 points including 7-10 from 3-point line, was Senior Borgia M'bala. M'bala's perforamance led the way for the Rams, as Borgia finished with a team-high 27 points, including six 3's. Moreover, M'bala was the second Ram on the night to surpass the 1,000th career point total mark in Bluefield College basketball (Gillard for the Lady Rams). He needed 17 points, and he crushed by netting an additional 10 on top of it.
Bluefield will be at home on Tue, Feb 21 at 7:30pm EST for the 1st-Round of the AAC Tournament against a TBD opponent.
