A professor of the English language at the Jiangsu Institute in Nanjing, China, Professor Zhaojun will visit Bluefield College January 8 through February 6.

"He's visiting our campus not only to gain a better understanding of our university culture, but also to share his experiences of what life is like in China," said Dr. Gerardo Cummings, director of BC's Global Education Program. "It's a great opportunity for our faculty and students and the Greater Bluefield community at-large to learn about the Chinese culture."

Among the opportunities available: two evening classes, Tuesday, January 24 and Tuesday, January 31 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Lansdell Hall 101, designed to explore Chinese history, culture and language.

"If you are planning to do business in China, study abroad there, or if you are simply intrigued by the Chinese culture, its history and its language, this is a great opportunity to engage with an ambassador of the Chinese culture," said Dr. Cummings. "The classes are open and free to all."

Professor Zhaojun also will lead a workshop, titled "China 2012," at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1 in Science Center 121. He will make additional presentations to students in classes for world religions, world literature, world civilization, senior seminar, criminal justice, criminology, and journalism.

The college will also take Professor Zhaojun on a tour of the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. In addition, during his stay in Bluefield he will be visiting other local colleges and schools, including Bluefield (WV) State College and Rocky Gap (VA) High School.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local residents to visit the Bluefield College campus and to experience the Chinese culture, history and language first-hand," said Dr. Cummings.

Local schools and civic clubs are invited to contact the college to arrange a visit or speaking opportunity with Professor Zhaojun. To arrange a visit, or for his complete itinerary, or for more information about these or future Global Education projects and events at Bluefield College, please contact Dr. Cummings by e-mail at or by phone at 276-326-4271.

An excellent opportunity for our BC students. I taught conversational English for five weeks at Weihei College for middle school teachers. The Chinese history and culture are very interesting. They are wonderful people.

Gerardo T. Cummings

I agree with Ms. Moyers-Dean. This is a great opportunity for people from the community to visit Bluefield College and engage with an ambassador of an exciting culture such as China. The third and last lecture is coming up on Tuesday January 31st, so I hope Pearl and anybody who reads this article will come and pay a visit.

I would encourage everyone to make good use of this opportunity. As a BC student in 1965 - 1967, China was the furtherest thing from my mind. But my last seventeen years has been spent in Asia, mostly in China, Singapore and Philippines. I learned the language to some degree and found it not to be as hard as you may think. The people in China are wonderful and I have many friends there today. Most of my consulting business has been with Chinese clients who are really good to work with and for. God has allowed me to help out also with an orphanage and attend a number of Christian Church Services there. Christianity is growing so fast there and my church in Singapore has missions there all the time. These days I go to China like I go to any city around the world. The future of the USA is now tied directly with China and the more we learn, appreciate and understnd the better we all can live together in peace and harmony.
