Bulldogs strong 2nd half too much for Bluefield in MBB play By Sports Information Department BC | January 26, 2012 | RSS Bluefield College Athletics Sports Information Department Bluefield, Virginia Barboursville, Ky.- The Bluefield men’s basketball team (14-10, 7-2 AAC) fell 93-79 at Union tonight. The Rams jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Union answered, getting the ball inside for six-straight points in the post. A three-pointer from Borgia M’bala put Bluefield up 14-10, but Union got six-straight points in transition to retake the lead. After Bluefield got tagged with a technical foul, Union went on a 10-2 run to open up a 30-22 lead. M’bala knocked down two more three-pointers and the Rams were able to cut the lead to one before a quick 9-0 run from Union put them back ahead 39-29. Andrew Wilson hit two free throws with just under four seconds remaining in the first half. He then stole then inbound pass and hit a three-point buzzer-beater to cut the deficit to three points at halftime. Bluefield was able to tie the game at 45-45 early in the second half, but Union was able to score points in the low post and in transition to pull away and close out the Rams. M’bala lead the Rams with 34 points, including seven three-pointers. Kearsten Marion finished with 17 points. Union double-teamed Byron Carpenter for most of the game, holding him to 3-12 shooting from the floor. Even though the last-place team in the AAC contained Carpenter well, he stiii managed to finish with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Bluefield's loss to Union slips them into a tie for 1st-place in the AAC, and will look to stay on track as they host Point University in Bluefield on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm EST.
