Bluefield Edges Out Bethany in Final Minutes

Bluefield, VA—The Rams beat Bethany College 5-4, despite trailing by one point leading into the 2nd quarter.
The Rams led by freshman midfielder Jake Summer, scored the teams first two points in the first half. Bethany College's Cameron Ward answered in the form of two goals, followed by a goal by Alex Stubbs brought the teams to 3-2 at the half.
The second half started out with a Bluefield comeback. Nago Mbengue led the team by scoring the goal that tied up the game 3-3, with 35:16 left in the second half.
BethanyCollege's Arkangelo James, scored the team's only second half goal with 13:57 remaining in the game bringing the score 4-3.
Bluefield quickly answered the point with 12:49 to go when Zach Breland entered the game and scored the tying goal. Both teams then got in a shooting match with BethanyCollege having 15 shots in the second half followed closely by the Rams 9 shots.
The game winning kick came again by Breland after an assist by Tyler Koerwitz, in minute 7 of the game. The Rams held off BethanyCollege to bring the team to a 4-1 record thus far in the season.
Jeff Fields had 9 saves during the game with 4 goalie assists and the Rams totaled up 10 shots on goal.
The Rams soccer team will be on the road for a pair of games versus MilliganCollege on September 15, and Campbellsville University on September 18. The Rams will return home to East River Soccer Complex on September 23 when they take on West Virginia Tech at 3:00 pm.
