Bluefield College Releases 2009-2010 Theatre Schedule
Bluefield College Theatre has released its schedule of performances for the 2009-2010 academic year. Featured on this year's schedule are performances of "The Crucible," "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," "Blithe Spirit," "Steel Magnolias," and "Oliver Twist."
October 26, 2009
The Crucible November 12-17
7:30 p.m. each day, except a 2 p.m Sunday matinee, Harman Chapel
Written in 1952 at the height of the McCarthy era, "The Crucilbe" is a scathing look at what happens when people allow fear and suspicion to overcome reason. The play tells the frightening story of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, when a handful of hysterical girls turned the Puritan village of Salem into a nightmare of paranoia and madness.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
December 8 and 10
7:30 p.m. each night, Harman Chapel
BC's Children's Theatre presents this story of what happens when a family of near-juvenile-delinquents hijacks the nativity pageant at the local church. Despite concerns that the pageant will be a disaster with these young miscreants in all the leading roles, the final product is a miraculous surprise. Through the eyes of these unruly, misbehaved children, the church is able to see the true meaning of Christmas.
Blithe Spirit
February 18-21
7:30 p.m. each day, except a 2 p.m Sunday matinee, Harman Chapel
A ghostly comedy written by English playwright Noel Coward, "Blithe Spirit" tells the story of a novelist and his wife, who are suffering from an unwanted houseguest -- the ghost of the novelist's first wife, who desperately wants her husband back. Hilarity ensues as the "blithe spirit" tries everything she can think of to kill her widowed husband so that they can be together forever.
Steel Magnolias
April 22-25
7:30 p.m. each day, except a 2 p.m Sunday matinee, Harman Chapel
Presented as part of the Virginia Commission of the Arts series, "Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts," BC's rendition of "Steel Magnolias" is a beloved comedy about the resilience, fortitude, and humor of Southern women.
Oliver Twist
June 3-6
7:30 p.m. each day, except a 2 p.m Sunday matinee, Harman Chapel
Written by BC Theatre's artistic director Charles M. Reese," this brand new adaptation to Charles Dickens' classic "Oliver Twist" tells the moving story of young Oliver, a foundling under the care of a local parish who longs for security and a loving home. He runs away from the bitter existence of his life in the workhouse, but finds he has jumped from the frying pan into the fire when he lands in the cutthroat world of Victorian London's slums. When things seem darkest, Oliver finds what he has been looking for all his life -- a home filled with warmth, comfort, and love.
