Bluefield College alumnus C. Ray Wingrove is giving back to his alma mater.

Wingrove, a 1957 BC graduate, and his wife, Jane, recently established the C. Ray and Jane Wingrove Endowed Scholarship to benefit Bluefield College students in the Teacher Education Program.

"The Wingroves have established this scholarship because they understand the importance of a college education," said Bluefield College president, Dr. David Olive, "and they know the positive impact teachers have in the classroom."

The scholarship will be awarded to rising juniors who are planning to pursue a career in teaching or research in education. Applicants must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 and be in good standing at Bluefield College in order to qualify for the award. Preference will be given to students with the greatest financial need.

Mr. Wingrove earned an associate's degree from Bluefield College before transferring to the University of Richmond where he earned a bachelor's degree in sociology. He also holds a master's degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he has completed post-doctoral studies in gerontology at the University of Georgia and the University of Southern California. Since 2002, he has been a retired professor emeritus from the University of Richmond.

Mrs. Wingrove graduated from the Henry Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia and is currently a realtor with C. Porter Vaughn, Inc.
