Bluefield College alumnus David Bailey, a native of southwest Virginia who now lives in Richmond, Virginia, recently received the Policy Maker Award from the Virginia Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (VACTE).
Dr. Bailey, who also serves on the Bluefield College Board of Trustees, received the honor in recognition of his "outstanding support for the teacher education profession across the Commonwealth."
According to the VACTE, the Policy Maker Award is reserved for individuals who "exemplify the ideals of professional educators who believe in the appropriateness of educational preparation and life-long learning for all teachers."
"The Policy Maker Award honors the contributions of a local, state, or national policy leader who has positively influenced the field of teacher education," said Sandi Cohen, chair of the VACTE Policy Maker Awards Committee, "and whose efforts have resulted in improvement in the preparation or professional development of teachers in the Commonwealth of Virginia."
Each VACTE member institution, like Bluefield College, may nominate one policy maker whom the institution wishes to recognize for significant contributions to teacher education and/or professional development. A letter of nomination from the individual or institution making the nomination must include information establishing the individual's impact on the professional education field. "David has worked on behalf of our teacher education organizations for years," said Dr. Donna Watson, director of BC's Teacher Education Program and a representative of the VACTE, "and he updates us at each conference about his work with the Virginia legislature."
Dr. Bailey, who once served on faculty at Bluefield College, was recognized as the Policy Maker Award recipient during the VACTE's Sring Conference in April.
After graduating from Bluefield College in 1960, he earned additional degrees from Carson-Newman College, Union Theological Seminary, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, New York University, and San Francisco Theological Seminary. After serving many years as a pastor and professor, Dr. Bailey is now a lobbyist, consultant, and the owner of David Bailey and Associates, a full-service governmental relations firm in Richmond, designed to foster effective and ethical government relations.
