The Bluefield College women’s volleyball team closed out the regular season with an 18-25, 25-18, 28-26, 31-29 rematch-win over UVA-Wise on senior night at the Dome Gymnasium.
The Lady Rams improved their overall record to 7-25 with the nonconference win over the Lady Cavaliers (11-18, 3-8 Mid-South) and will look to carry the momentum into the AAC Tournament.
Bluefield opened the regular season with a loss in straight sets on Sept. 1 at UVA-Wise.
Senior night ceremonies opened the final home match for defensive specialist Yeda Duarte, outside hitter/defensive specialist Ashley Strickland, and middle hitter Megan Randall.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelsee Smith came out strong early in the first set, picking up kills on three of Bluefield’s first four points. After the Lady Rams took a 10-9 lead, UVA-Wise went on a 12-2 run to open up a big lead on its way to taking the set 25-18.
The second set had a familiar start, with the Lady Rams taking a 10-9 lead, but this time they kept their foot on the gas and went on a 5-0 run. From that point, they did not relinquish the lead on their way to a 25-18 win.
Bluefield continued that momentum into the start of the third set, jumping out to an early lead and pushing it to 21-15. However, the Lady Cavaliers refused to go away quietly, going on an 8-1 run.
Randall was blocked by Mikaela Anders to tie the set at 22-22. On the following play, Bluefield was unable to return a UVA-Wise attack, giving the Lady Cavaliers their first lead of the set at 23-22.
Coming out of a Bluefield timeout called by head coach Brian Votaw, Randall came through with a kill to tie the set at 23-23. An ace from junior setter Cheznee Daily put the Lady Rams back in front at 24-23. A kill from UVA-Wise outside hitter Megan Funk knotted the score back up at 24-24.
The two teams alternated points until a kill from Strickland tied it up for the final time at 26-26. The Lady Cavaliers were unable to return the next two plays and Bluefield took the set 28-26 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
Randall and Smith each racked up three early kills to start the fourth set and pushed the Lady Rams to a 10-2 lead. They would hold that lead until the Lady Cavaliers fought back to tie the set at 23-23 when Smith tried to shoot the ball to the left side and just missed the line.
A block from Randall put the Lady Rams ahead 25-24, but Funk answered with a kill for UVA-Wise to tie it back up at 25-25. Daily gave Bluefield the lead by catching the Lady Cavaliers off guard on the second hit, placing the ball just inside the ten-foot line and out of the reach of the defenders.
Kills from Funk helped put UVA-Wise ahead 28-27, but that would be the final lead of the night for the Lady Cavaliers.
A kill and a block from Strickland put Bluefield ahead 29-28. UVA-Wise tied it back up at 29-29, but back-to-back kills from Bluefield middle hitter Angi Highlander sealed the set at 31-29 and clinched a hard-fought match victory for the Lady Rams.
Balanced production pushed the Lady Rams to victory in a true team effort. Randall finished with 14 kills and Highlander had 12 kills. Strickland added 11 kills and Smith finished with nine kills.
Daily had 44 assists and 18 digs to go along with five kills.
Duarte had 23 digs in the match. She came into the night ranked 10th in NAIA with a 5.77 digs per game average. She finished the regular season with a total of 629 digs.
The AAC Tournament starts Nov. 9 in Kingsport, Tenn. Bluefield will play Tennessee Wesleyan (5-20, 0-15 AAC) at 11 a.m. The winner of that match will face Union (16-14, 13-1 AAC) at 6:30 p.m.
