Bluefield College Theatre alumnus Bobby Hall (right), a veteran now at Theatre West Virginia, and current BC music student Jonathan Penn lead the cast of BC Theatre's "Big River," slated for October 23-28.
Based on Mark Twain’s classic American novel “Huckleberry Finn,” BC’s performances of “Big River” will take place at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, October 23-27, and at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 28.
All shows will take place inside BC’s Harman Chapel. Admission for each performance will be $10 for adults and $5 for non-BC students and senior citizens.
Under the direction of BC Theatre professor Charles Reese, “Big River” contains libretto by William Hauptman and score by country music legend Roger Miller, the songwriter of “King of the Road” and “England Swings.”
“’Big River’ is a great show,” said Reese. “The story is very true to Mark Twain’s novel, and the music by Roger Miller is just plain fun. Audiences will be tapping their toes and humming the tunes all the way home.”
The Bluefield rendition of the musical features a cast of 18 actors composed of Bluefield College students and members of the community, including BC theatre student Bobby Hall, who plays Huck, the protagonist of the story. Hall has performed at Theatre West Virginia in both its summer and touring companies. He also has performed in BC Theatre’s “Diary of Anne Frank,” “Our Town,” and “Oklahoma!”
Bluefield College music major Jonathan Penn plays the role of Jim, the runaway slave befriended by Huck in the play. Penn has performed in BC’s 2010 production of “Oklahoma!” as the antagonist Judd and in numerous Opera Theatre performances at BC.
The Duke and the King, two drifters who exploit Huck and Jim for their own larcenous gain, are played by BC graduate Ben Shumate and BC senior music major Josh King. Other cast members include Kaleb Cline as Tom Sawyer, Kat Satschi as Mary Jane Wilkes, Jennifer Bohannan and Mindy Blume as the Widow Douglas and Miss Watson, Christian Barham as Pap Finn, Samantha Corker as the Foolish Young Girl, and Summer Wilding as Aunt Sally.
Music ensemble members include Jaron DeLaney, Tyler Francis, Tehillah Johnson, Kara Neal, Alexandra Stout, Ty Tatum, and Brittany Walters. Joining Reese in directing the production will be BC theatre instructor Rebecca McCoy-Reese, with music direction offered by music instructor Lisa Moxley. BC senior theatre major Katherine Satschi will provide choreography.
