Four students, Courtney Dutton, Matthew Hayes, Bethany Liddle, and Morgan Lloyd took a trip to Richmond, Va., to thank Virginia’s senators and representatives for providing VTAG.

Established in 1972, the Tuition Assistance Grant Program (VTAG) is designed to assist Virginia residents who attend accredited private, non-profit colleges and universities in Virginia for other than religious training or theological education.

Eligible undergraduate students can be funded up to $2,650 and graduate students a maximum of $1,150.

The students were selected by BC Director of Admissions Mark Hipes to make the capital trip.

“I go through students, starting with seniors who have never been, particularly history majors, who would find that interesting,” said Hipes. “I e-mailed a handful of students and the first four to reply went.”

The group met, talked, and thanked representatives.

“We went around and thanked them for support of VTAG and hopefully their continued support,” said Morgan Lloyd, a history education major.

For Bethany Liddle, a junior from Baywood, Va., the trip hit home. She met with Sen. Bill Carrico, who represents Grayson County, Va.,--her home.

“Courtney and I thanked Bill Carrico and Israel O'Quinn (R-5th District),” said Liddle. “I already knew Bill and she already knew Israel O’Quinn because she’s from Washington County.”

This trip was also a chance for the four BC students to tour Richmond, Va.

“It was a really cool experience,” said Liddle. “It was just really cool to just be in Richmond. Cool to walk downtown.”

Even though criminal justice major Matthew Hayes only lives an hour away from Richmond, he had never been to the Governor’s Mansion.

“It was very interesting; good experience to walk around the capital,” said Hayes. “I had never done that.”
