Bluefield College will commemorate the 25th anniversary of its men’s soccer program with a two-day celebration, September 15-16, featuring an alumni reunion dinner, a reunion tailgate, current BC soccer action, and an alumni soccer game.

BC launched its first ever intercollegiate men’s soccer team in the fall of 1992 under the supervision of Coach Carl Wiersema and with players like Tim Eller, Todd Hurm, Billy Parish, Zach Roberts, Sheldon Ross and Jonathan Shockley, among others and many of which are still affiliated with organized soccer in some way.

“Looking back, I’m thankful for the experiences I had as part of that first BC soccer team,” said Parish, who now coaches soccer at Mercer Christian Academy in Princeton, West Virginia. “I have fond memories of my teammates and the staff. My love for soccer has only grown over the years, and I am more a student of the beautiful game today than I was in my college days. I am passing that love on to my kids and those that I coach at Mercer Christian.”

Parish and his teammates from 1992 also recall the challenge of fielding BC’s maiden team -- the limited experience, significant work to get in shape to compete at the college level, and numerous, oftentimes lop-sided losses for the fledging program. But, since those early days, Bluefield College soccer has grown and prospered, thanks to the foundation established and the commitment given by the players through the years. Today, the program boasts the addition of a women’s team in 2002, a national championship in men’s soccer in 2005, and two other national tournament appearances for men’s soccer in the last three seasons. And this year, the men’s team will celebrate yet another milestone with its 25th anniversary.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been that long ago,” added Parish, “but I guess that is a sign of getting old.”

The celebration will begin with a 25th anniversary reunion dinner, Friday, September 15 at 6 p.m. at The Clover Club, upstairs at the Railyard in Bluefield, West Virginia. More than 25 guests have already made reservations for the dinner.

The celebration will continue on Saturday, September 16, beginning with the Jason Elswick Memorial Scholarship 5K Challenge. Alumni and friends are invited to run or walk in the event, designed to preserve the memory of a BC student who lost his life before fulfilling his dream of becoming a teacher. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. at the Dome Gymnasium with the race starting at 8:30 a.m. The cost is a gift of $25 that will go to support the Jason Elswick Memorial Scholarship for teacher education students.

At 11 a.m. on Saturday, guests are invited to East River Soccer Complex for a soccer reunion tailgate and more food and fellowship before the Lady Rams soccer team takes on Truett-McConnell College at noon, followed by the men’s soccer team against Truett at 2:30 p.m. The celebration will conclude with an alumni soccer game at East River immediately after the men’s soccer game.

“We invite all alumni and friends, but especially our former men’s soccer players to celebrate this special occasion,” said BC’s Josh Grubb, director of alumni relations, “with good food, fellowship, soccer action, and other fun.”
