Bluefield College is looking for a few good voices.
The college’s Masterworks Chorale will begin rehearsals in preparation for its spring concert, and, as always, community residents are invited to be a part of the college/community choir.
Masterworks rehearsals will take place on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Shott Hall, beginning Monday, January 28, in preparation for the group’s spring performance, Tuesday, April 23.
This spring’s Masterworks concert will feature selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” parts two and three, including the popular chorus favorites “Lift up Your Heads,” “Surely, He Hath Borne our Griefs,” “Hallelujah,” and “Worthy is the Lamb.”
“While part one of ‘Messiah’ follows the Christmas story, the second and third parts describe Christ’s sacrifice, resurrection, and victory,” said Dr. Benjamin Thorburn, assistant professor of music and director of BC’s Masterworks Chorale. “With our concert taking place a few weeks after Easter, it is my hope that this music will give us and our audience the opportunity to celebrate and reflect even more upon the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
The program will also feature lesser-known selections, like “He Trusted in God” and “Since by Man Came Death.” The score for the program -- the New Novello Choral Edition, edited by Watkins Shaw (1992) -- can be purchased online in advance of rehearsals from SheetMusicPlus.com or Amazon.com. Participants are encouraged to order a copy as soon as possible in order to have the music no later than January 28.
Masterworks Chorale is a chorus composed of voices from both the Bluefield College family and the community. The group performs classic choral works in concerts in both the winter and spring. Membership in Masterworks is open to anyone from the ninth grade toadult “who loves to sing, can match pitch, and blend with a group.” No audition is required.
