Bluefield College's Fine Arts Community School has released its schedule of courses for the fall 2011 semester.

 

In existence for more than 16 years, BC's Fine Arts Community School (FACS) is designed to enable local families and students of all ages and interests, including home-schoolers, to explore and study the arts with the guidance of mentors who have appropriate training and experience.

 

Classes this fall will begin as early as the week of September 19 with others beginning later in the fall.

 

The fall course listing includes "Private Instrument Lessons," "Private Violin Lessons," "Private Piano and Organ Lessons," "Private Guitar Lessons," "Private Voice Lessons," "Private Drum Lessons," "Bodhran Drum Lessons," "Dance: Tap," "Dance: Ballet," "Circular Patchwork Quilting," "Basket Making," "Appalachian Corn Shuck Crafts," "Art," "Mug Me: The Art of Having Fun," "Fun Fine Arts Fridays," "Refrigerator Art," "Wreath Making and Floral Arranging," "Chinese Culture and Language," "Middle/High School French," and "Youth Theatre."

 

Private Instrument Lessons

Saxophone, clarinet, tuba, trombone, trumpet, flute, oboe, and bassoon

30-minute lessons once each week for five or 10 weeks

Days and times to be determined with student

Tuition: $190 (10-week session) or $110 (five-week session)

Ages 10 and up

Private Violin Lessons

30-minute lessons once each week for five or 10 weeks

Days and times to be determined with student

Tuition: $170 (10-week session) or $90 (five-week session)

Private Piano and Organ Lessons

30-minute lessons once each week for five or 10 weeks

Private Guitar Lessons

30-minute lessons once each week for five or 10 weeks

Private Drum Lessons

Bodhran Drum Lessons

Learn to play this exciting hand-held drum of Ireland/Scotland.

Thursdays 4:00-5:00 PM

Beginning September 29 for 10 weeks

Tuition: $135 (includes drum and CD) plus $25 registration fee

Ages 9 and up

Instructor: Charles Reese

 

Dance: Tap

Teaching the novice the basic and intermediate tap steps and combinations, as well as how to count music and develop a good sense of rhythm.

Tuesdays 4:00-5:00 PM

Beginning September 20 for 10 weeks

Tuition: $110

Ages 12-18

Instructor: Katherine Santschi

 

Dance: Ballet

Teaching the novice correct alignment, ballet positions, steps, and simple ballet combinations.

Tuesdays 5:00-6:00 PM

Circular Patchwork Quilting

Turn a square into a circle, back into a square and finally back into a circle. Bring your sewing machines, rotary cutters, pinking sheers, pencil, threads and fabric.

Thursdays 10:00-11:30 AM or Saturdays 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Beginning September 22 (Thu.) for four weeks or October 29 (Sat.) for two weeks

Tuition: $75

Ages 12 and up

Basket Making

Learn the basic techniques of basket making by making a simple basket.

Mondays 6:00-8:00 PM

Beginning October 17 for two weeks

Tuition: $30 plus $10 materials fee

Ages 10 and up

Appalachian Corn Shuck Crafts Workshop

See various examples of corn shuck crafts with emphasis on how to use and manipulate the corn shuck material to make a corn shuck doll of your own.

Saturday, October 8, 1:00-3:00 PM

Tuition: $20 plus $10 materials fee

Pottery

Learn hand building, wheel turning techniques, glaze applications, and how to manipulate clay to form functional and decorative ware.

Mug Me: The Art of Having Fun

What better way to spend a Saturday, drinking coffee and being creative. Make a coffee mug while enjoying some coffee.

Fun Fine Arts Fridays

Enjoy a variety of "the arts" including theatre, music, print making, and pottery.

Fridays 5:00-6:00 PM

Beginning September 23 for 10 weeks

Tuition: $125

Ages 8-12

Instructors: Amanda Parks, Jessica Paris-Chambers, Jeri Lynn Anderson, and Danielle Workman

 

Refrigerator Artists

Kids' hands-on enrichment course designed to stimulate learning/creativity through self-expression. Painting, self-portraits, collages, and an introduction to some of the great masters.

Tuesdays 6:00-7:00 PM

Beginning September 20 for six weeks

Tuition: $65 plus $25 material fee

Ages 5-7

Wreath Making and Floral Arranging Workshop

Make a wreath for the holidays and learn tips on floral arranging.

Saturday, November 5, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Chinese Culture and Language

Learn first-hand about the culture and language of China from visiting professor and students from the Jiangsu Institute in Nanjing, China.

Tuesdays 7:00-8:00 PM

Beginning September 27 for four weeks

Tuition: free

Instructor: Professor from the Jiangsu Institute

 

Middle/High School French Class

An introduction to the French language that will involve elementary grammar, sentence structure, and conversational French.

Tuesdays 3:00-4:00 PM

Beginning September 27 for eight weeks

Tuition: $100

Grades 7-12

Bluefield Youth Theatre

Be a part of Bluefield Youth Theatre's eighth production of Charles Dickens' beloved "A Christmas Carol."

Rehearsals Mondays 4:00-6:00 PM

Beginning October 24 and until performances December 12-15

Tuition: $125

Ages 9-18

A non-refundable registration fee is due when registering for most BC Fine Arts Community School lessons and classes (but not workshops). If registering more than one person within a family, the registration fee is discounted to $15 per person. Registration fees for classes and tuition for workshops are due by the start of instruction and may be mailed and made payable to Bluefield College, 3000 College Drive, Bluefield, VA 24605.
