Blue Mountain Performing Arts will kick off its 2017-’18 concert series with the critically acclaimed Rainier Trio, Monday, September 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bluefield High School Auditorium.

Co-sponsored by Blue Mountain, the Bluefield High School Foundation, Bluefield College and WVVA-TV, the concert is open and free to BMPA season ticket holders and members of the Bluefield College family. Individual tickets for non-BC and non-Blue Mountain members are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

Now in its ninth season, the Rainier Trio is an exciting and energetic group that captivates audiences with gems from the violin-viola-piano trio repertoire. A combination written for since the 17th century, the repertoire includes works by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Milhaud, bridging genres from classical to ragtime and tango.

Comprised of violinist Kevin Matheson, violist Bryan Matheson, and pianist Brenda Wittwer, the trio has performed in numerous concert series throughout West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, including a series of concerts in Pittsburgh and on the city’s classical radio station WQED, a performance at Musikfest in Bethlehem, and a show with opera singers at the Vocal Arts and Music Festival at Virginia Tech.

Hailed as “two perfect virtuosos” and recognized for their “mesmerizing” and “spirited” performances, the Mathesons have also played internationally in Japan, Sicily, Ireland, and the Czech Republic. In addition, they have performed at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall as part of the Ibla Grand Prize Competition Winners’ Tour.

Wittwer, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, who now lives in Wytheville, Virginia, has been an accompanist for Theater Charlotte, Pfeiffer University Concert Choir, and Sounds of America, a musical group which toured the 48 contiguous states. With the Wytheville Community College Choir, she has performed at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The Rainier Trio’s visit to Bluefield is made possible in part by funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Blue Mountain Performing Arts Series is designed to foster and encourage public appreciation of music, the teaching of music, and the history of music. Through the support of donors and paying members and in an effort to support its mission, Blue Mountain brings a wide variety of quality musical programs to the community through its yearlong Concert Series.

Annual membership with Blue Mountain, which includes admission to all BMPA shows at a significant cost savings, is $40 for adults, $35 for senior citizens, and $15 for students. Family packages, including two adults and all children living within the home, are $85. Individual tickets to Blue Mountain events are $15 to $20 for adults and $10 for students. All concerts are general admission with no reserved seats. Box office and doors open one hour before show time.
