PinkThe Bluefield College Dome was filled with nothing but pink shirts and accessories Feb. 21as the men’s and women’s basketball teams competed on behalf of breast cancer.

Both teams took on University of the Cumberlands, which took part in the pink-out as well. The theme for the night was “Fighting breast cancer awareness.”

The women’s game was played first. Bluefield College cheerleaders were all in pink tie-die shirts and socks. The Lady Rams wore white jerseys with pink trims on behalf of breast cancer, and the Cumberlands’ women’s team sported all-pink jerseys. The Lady Rams lost 43-56 but were glad they were able to compete for a good cause.

“Even though we didn’t get the win, I’m glad we got to come out here and compete for a good cause,” said Jessica Broskaw, the Lady Rams assistant coach.  “We all know breast cancer affects many women, and to come out here and compete for a good cause is great.”

Cumberlands’ women’s team appreciated the opportunity to be able to play for a good cause as well.

“I was all in on competing for this cause,” said Melissa Irvin, University of the Cumberlands’ women’s head coach. “We as women and young ladies know that it is important to fight for this cause because it affected so many. Just the opportunity to come here and compete for breast cancer is a blessing.”

Following the women’s game, the men played. Head Coach Richard Morgan wore a pink shirt and pink tie also on behalf of breast cancer, and the assistant coaches wore pink ties as well. Both men’s teams competed hard, but the Rams won 76-64 with leading scorers Kearston Marion and Byron Carpenter.

“It was good to come out here and get the win,” said Carpenter. “But it was even better knowing the theme and cause for the night. Breast cancer is indeed and issue in our society. Men can come together and compete for a good cause as well.”

The Bluefield College men’s basketball team won their season finale against Cumberland University of Lebanon, Tenn. 75-63, but the women stumbled with a 65-57 loss. The Lady Rams look to prepare for the next task at hand, which is the Mid-South conference tournament.
