Rams beat border-rival Bluefield State 5-1

In a battle of border state rivals, the Bluefield College Rams easily defeated Bluefield State 5-1 Thursday night at Bowen Field. Left-hander David Gibson threw six innings as the winner and starting pitcher for the Rams.

Bluefield State would get on the scoreboard first in the 3rd inning off a sacrifice-fly scoring Ryan Duncan after two crucial bunts earlier in the inning that would inevitably get Duncan into scoring position.

The 3rd inning would be a popular one as the Rams wouldn’t be denied. After two singles to start the inning, Victor Torres ripped a double to deep right-center field scoring two runs. Next up, Travis Weaver singled up in the middle to score Torres making it 3-1.

After igniting the bats offensively, the Rams showed up defensively in the top of the 4th. Gibson gave up a laser hit putting runners at the corners with two outs, but battled back ending the inning with tough breaking ball strikeout.

In the 5th, the Rams continued to put runs on the board, all coming with two outs; something they have become freakishly accustomed to over the past three weeks. LF Kyle Cabral helped ignite the runs hitting a single and with his speed, he advanced to 3rd base. With another hit by Gatewood, Cabral scored and with help from Smurthwaite, Gatewood’s run extended the lead to 5-1.

David Gibson pitched a solid six innings of work on the mound for the Rams and with the way the season is closing out, White was able to bring in Akers in the top of the 7th. Akers went straight to work, striking out five in two innings. He paved the way for the Rams’ closer, Josh Mcquade. Mcquade would earn the save, with two strikeouts out of three outs.

Men’s baseball has been able to keep itself around the .500 mark overall on the season with the win, as it finishes the regular season with a Sunday afternoon home game vs. Reinhardt. The game will be picked up in the 5th inning after an earlier postponement in the season.
