Connie Maasry, an adult degree completion graduate from Richmond, Virginia, was recently hired as a special education teacher at Woolridge Elementary School in Midlothian, Virginia.

Maasry, a May 2008 BC graduate with a degree in behavioral science, will work with moderate mentally disabled (MOMD) students in the special education program at Woolridge. She will bring five years of experience as an instructional aide in special education to her new position, but more importantly, she will bring her BC education.

"In my books and at our training (for the MOMD position), we are seeing and hearing all the information (BC professors) taught us in our classes," Maasry said. "I can honestly say I know what they are talking about."

Finishing college and advancing in her career became a goal of Maasry after her husband, a 1985 BC alumnus, passed away in 2003 at the age of 37. Soon after, Maasry said, she heard about BC's adult degree completion program on the radio, and the program, she added, "fit all [her] needs."

"I knew exactly what I needed," said the mother of two. "I knew I had to have my degree to move forward in my field."

Working now on a provisional license with the Virginia Department of Education in order to teach in the classroom, Maasry is also considering pursuing her master's degree.

"I am very proud of Connie and believe that she will do this job with passion," said Dr. Larry Sinsabaugh, an instructor in the degree completion program. "The school will benefit greatly from their decision to hire her."
