Bluefield, Va. -- The Bluefield College Lady Rams were hungry for a win and that's exactly what they earned in a four-set (25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23) victory over rival Mountain State (WV) University on Thursday night at the Dome Gymnasium.
After splitting the first two sets, the Lady Rams trailed 14-11 in the third frame before reeling off six straight points to gain control and claim the win.
In the fourth set, seven ties were recorded in the early going.
Bluefield created some cushion by going ahead 22-16 and then had match point at 24-19, but the Lady Cougars didn't die quietly.
MSU scored the next four points -- which was capped by a Jennifer Baker ace -- to close within 24-23 and push the Lady Rams back on their heels.
BC (4-11) responded and finally executed match point on its fifth attempt as freshman Angi Highlander took the set from freshman Cheznee Daily and spiked it to the floor.
Daily finished with game-highs in assists (42) and aces (4).
Junior Alyssa Weddle (14 kills), senior Takashi Franklin (13 kills), and freshman Kelsie Cline (12 kills) paced the outside attack for the Lady Rams, while senior Felicia Marmo (23 digs) and sophomore Yeda Duarte (15 digs) led the back line.
For MSU (6-10), Katie Davis posted 15 kills and three blocks, while Alex Albright collected 10 kills and Kayla Matics dished out 40 assists.
Bluefield receives a well-deserved rest period over the next six days and then has a return visit to Mountain State on Thursday, October 1st.
