Disbursement Process Requirements

Based on the following forms of financial assistance, these requirements must be met in order for the disbursement process to take place.

Undergraduate On Campus

Pell Grants

  • Must be enrolled in at least three (3) credit hours.
  • Awarded only up to 12 credit hours each semester.
  • Awarded to undergraduate students only.
  • Pays toward outstanding balance first.
  • Must meet all federal eligibility requirements.

Federal Loans

  • Must be enrolled at least half-time; six (6) hours for undergraduate and graduate.
  • Disburses after the student becomes eligible (actively attending at least half-time).
  • Pays toward outstanding balance first.
  • Must meet all federal eligibility requirements.

VTAG

  • Must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours.
  • Bona fide resident of Virginia for at least one year.
  • Application received by July 31st deadline date.
  • Awarded to undergraduate students enrolling in a traditional calendar year only.
  • Pays toward outstanding balance first.
  • Disburses after the student becomes eligible (actively attending at least full-time).

Undergraduate and Graduate Online

Pell Grants

  • Must be enrolled in at least three (3) credit hours.
  • Awarded only up to 12 credit hours each semester.
  • Awarded to undergraduate students only.
  • Pro-rated disbursements based on sub-term enrollment (see Example 1).
  • Pays toward outstanding balance first.
  • Must meet all federal eligibility requirements.

Example 1

An undergraduate online student eligible for Pell is attending three (3) hours in the first eight (8) weeks and three (3) hours in the second eight (8) weeks. The student can expect half of the Pell Grant after his/her class in the first eight (8) weeks begins, and the remaining half after the beginning of the second eight (8) weeks.

Note: Enrollment and pro-ration of Pell applies to all combinations of enrollment; however, a student must be enrolled in at least one course each eight (8) weeks.

Federal Loans

  • Must be enrolled at least half-time; six (6) hours for undergraduate and graduate.
  • Disbursements based on semester enrollment (see Example 2).
  • Disburses after the student becomes eligible (enrolled at least half-time).
  • Pays toward outstanding balance first.
  • Must meet all federal eligibility requirements.

Example 2

An online undergraduate student planning to borrow federal loans is attending three (3) hours in the first eight (8) weeks and three (3) hours in the second eight (8) weeks. The student can expect half of the loan after his/her class in the first eight (8) weeks begins and the remaining half after the beginning of the second eight (8) weeks.

Note: The half-time enrollment criteria applies to all combinations of enrollment for all students and levels.

VTAG

  • Must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours.
  • Bona fide resident of Virginia for at least one year.
  • Application received by July 31st deadline date or a recipient in the prior award year.
  • Awarded to undergraduate students enrolling in a traditional calendar year only – August start date (see Example 3).
  • Pays toward outstanding balance first.
  • Disburses after the student becomes eligible (actively attending at least full-time).

Example 3

An undergraduate student begins at August start and is attending six (6) hours in the first eight (8) weeks and six (6) hours in the second eight (8) weeks. The student meets all eligibility requirements and can expect the full VTAG to release to his/her student account after the second eight (8) weeks begins.
