Audition Requirements

All incoming music major students are required to perform an audition.  Other incoming students from any major are eligible to audition for Music Department Scholarships.  The audition process consists of a musical performance and a personal interview with Music Department Faculty.  The auditions serve two purposes.  First, the audition is required for formal acceptance into the Music Department.  Secondly, the audition qualifies students to receive Music Department scholarships.

Auditions may be scheduled as a part of an Open House event or on an individual basis by contacting Bryant Moxley, Department Chair. (276.326.4248 or  )  The audition should consist of two contrasting pieces that demonstrate a student’s musical abilities. Vocalists and Instrumentalists auditioning will be provided an accompanist or may bring a CD accompaniment if desired.  Pianists and organists auditioning should select pieces from contrasting periods.  You may select to audition performing any style of music but preference will be given to auditions which include selections from the Western Classical tradition.  Hymn arrangements and Broadway selections are also acceptable.

The interview portion of the audition serves three purposes:

  1. To provide an opportunity for the faculty members and prospective students to become acquainted.

  2. To answer any questions the prospective student may have about the academic program.

  3. To help the prospective student understand the requirements and expectations of musical study at Bluefield College.

Music Department scholarships are awarded each Spring to both Music Majors and students of other majors.  These scholarships are renewable as long as the student is academically in good standing. All students who receive these scholarships must participate in two ensembles each semester they receive the scholarship.  Additionally, non-music majors will successfully complete two semesters of private lessons (voice or any instrument) or class voice.  (first year only)  Music Majors are required to maintain a 2.5 or higher grade point average within the major  (2.0 overall GPA).  Other conditions of the scholarship are listed in the Scholarship Acceptance Form which must be returned by the student to receive the scholarship.  All scholarships awarded by the Music Department must be approved by the Financial Aid Office of Bluefield College.
