Joe Saunders

Associate Professor of Chemistry

Bio:

Dr. Saunders joined the Bluefield College community in 2007. His background includes over 16 years of pedagogical leadership in chemistry, teaching class sizes from 1 to 200 (while at PSU) students. Dr. Saunders currently teaches the following courses: General Chemistry I & II, Organic Chemistry I & II, Quantitative and Instrumental Analysis, Senior Seminar, Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Earth Science, The Science of Chocolate, and Chemistry Senior Seminar. His current outreach includes overseeing a biennial chemistry laboratory sequence for primarily home-schooled high school students, directing Forensic Fun weekend events, and holding week-long science camps in the summer. Dr. Saunders encourages students as they ponder careers in science to consider his favorite verse, Romans 1:20: “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”

Sandra Elswick

Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Bio:

Mrs. Elswick served as an adjunct faculty member in mathematics from 1991 until 1996 when she joined the faculty full-time as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Courses Mrs. Elswick teaches include: College Algebra I and II, Precalculus I and II, Calculus I and II, Introduction to Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, College Geometry, Introduction to Statistics, and Math for Elementary Education Teachers. Mrs. Elswick holds memberships in the Math Association of America and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Lewis Buterakos

Associate Professor of Mathematics

Bio:

Dr. Buterakos came to Bluefield College in 2002. Prior to joining the faculty at BC, he held the position of Instructor of Mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1997-2002. Dr. Buterakos has always embraced an interdisciplinary approach to the Sciences, which eventually led him to complete a Doctorate in Mathematics at Virginia Tech. Dr. Buterakos currently holds the positions of Division Chair of the Science and Mathematics and serves as the Faculty Athletic Representative to the NAIA, in which capacity he is responsible for ensuring that all athletes are eligible in accordance with the rules and regulations of the NAIA prior to representing BC in competition. He teaches or has taught courses in College Algebra, Mathematics of Finance, Statistics, Precalculus, Multivariable and Vector Calculus, Differential Equations, Abstract Algebra, Elementary Real Analysis, Numerical Analysis, and Physical Science.

Jason St.Pierre

Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Biology

Bio:

Dr. St.Pierre joined the Bluefield College family in 2010. His background includes over 15 years in the field of Reproductive Medicine where he served as an Embryologist and Laboratory Director for both hospital-based and private clinics. Dr. St.Pierre’s research interests have centered around developmental and reproductive biology with his dissertation focusing on chromatin structure in mammalian embryos and the effects of anti-cancer therapy on embryonic development. Courses Dr. St.Pierre teaches include: General Biology, Human Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Ecology, Biomedical Terminology, and Zoology among others. Dr. St.Pierre strives to keep his classes current with the inclusion of new and ground-breaking research as well as the latest ethical challenges that scientists and clinicians face in their careers. He also strives to provide personal instruction and counsel to enable students to pursue careers in the life sciences, research and medicine as scientists grounded in Christian faith.

Emily Lambert

Assistant Professor

Bio:

Dr. Emily Lambert joined the Bluefield College family in 2010 as an assistant professor. Prior to teaching at BC Dr. Lambert was a graduate teaching and research assistant at Virginia Tech. During her time at Virginia Tech she taught General Biology, Microbiology, and Pathogenic Bacteriology Labs. Her graduate research involved using microbial genetics to study germination in Bacillus anthracis the causative agent of anthrax. The courses that Dr. Lambert teaches at Bluefield College include Freshman Seminar, General and Fundamentals of Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Immunology, Parasitology, and a variety of special topics. Dr. Lambert strives to bring out the best in her students so that they may realize their full potential as students and children of God.
